First images with our own control system

Since September, our test microscope has been taking images with our own electronics and software. It is an existing scanning electron microscope that we control ourselves right down to the beam: deflection, scan signal and image acquisition come from us, not from the manufacturer. This is the control system that will later run our prototype.

Two things already work: two detectors operate at the same time and show shape and material in one image. And the software finds particles in the images by itself, so far with classical image processing; we are training the AI for this on simulated images.

Measured image of powder grains, coloured blue, individual areas orange.
Two detectors at once: shape (structure) and material (colour). Colourised, no scale bar.
Grey measured image of powder grains, many outlined in yellow or red and numbered.
Bakelite powder. Outlined in yellow: particles the software found by itself. No scale bar.

To be honest: the instrument is not yet calibrated, so the images carry no scale bar, and here the sample is still in a vacuum. The next step is the prototype with a window, with which we will measure in air. More on the technology on the Technology page.
